Originally developed by NASA and its contractors for use in satellite optics and spacesuit visors, dichroic glass is now available to artists through dichroic coating manufacturers like Duncan Dichroic. Our team has years of experience manufacturing high quality “dichro” for use by artists and manufacturers in an array of projects and products.  We’ve developed our own unique process to ensure the highest consistency and quality.

The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it transmits a different color than it reflects.  Certain wavelengths of light either pass through or are reflected. This causes an array of color to be displayed depending on the angle of view.  Patterns are etched on to the glass after it is coated using a special non-abrasive technique.  This complicated and sensitive process occasionally results in slight inconsistencies, which have become a trademark characteristic of handmade dichroic glass.
